Established in 2017, Water Footprint Implementation is a young organization specialized in Water Footprint Assessments and implementation of methods for Water Footprint reduction. WFI aims to have an impact on water resource consumption by helping the private sector, governments, and consumers to put the academic, data-based Water Footprint concept into practice. The aim of WFI is not only to provide a water consumption value based on the Water Footprint accounting but, more importantly, to support our clients to set and achieve water footprint reduction targets or to mitigate water risk. We do this by providing response measures from our in-house expertise or from a selection of our wide international network. We work closely with the best available expertise from the Water Management group of the University of Twente, the Netherlands and are a lead practice partner of the Water Footprint Network.
The ‘water footprint’ measures the consumption of freshwater resources for producing goods and services. The water footprint has three components: green, blue and grey. Together, these components provide a comprehensive picture of water use by specifying the source of water consumed, either as rainfall/soil moisture or surface/groundwater, and the volume of fresh water required for assimilation of pollutants. The water footprint of a product or service is the volume of freshwater used to produce the product/service, measured over the full supply chain. It is a multidimensional indicator, showing water consumption volumes by source and polluted volumes by type of pollution; all components of a total water footprint are specified geographically and temporally.
The water footprint shows water consumption which is different from water withdrawal. Consumption refers to water taken from a source and not returned to the same source. For example, a factory can withdraw 100 liters of water from a river and can discharge the same amount back to the river (under the assumption that both are the same quality). The water withdrawal of the factory is 100 liters, but water footprint will be zero since all water taken is returned to the same catchment area.
A Water Footprint Assessment is a four-phase process that starts with setting the scope of the assessment, quantifies and maps green, blue and grey water footprints, assesses the sustainability, efficiency and equitability of water use and identifies which strategic actions should be prioritised to make a footprint sustainable.
In short, the four phases are:
1. Scope setting
2. Water Footprint Accounting
3. Sustainability Assessment
4. Response Formulation
To perform a Water Footprint Assessment, detailed supply-chain and company specific data is needed as well as significant input and time resources allocated to the Sustainability Assessment phase to determine if the water consumption is environmentally sustainable, resource efficient and equitably allocated. Response strategies in general can range from ‘hard’ technological solutions to ‘soft’ solutions such as uptake of best practices or better stakeholder engagement. Precise response formulation is dependent on the Sustainability Assessment phase and thus can only be provided when the first 3 phases of the assessment have been carried out in full.
